BRUSSELS, Aug 9 The European Commission (EC) is in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities on energy-related issues, and is ready to discuss the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, a spokesman for the EC press service told RIA Novosti. Ukraine said in July that in accordance with Article 274 of the Agreement on the association requested consultations with the European Commission on the «Nord Stream 2», which, it was alleged, threatens the country's security and violates the principles of diversification of the EU Energy Union. The European Commission announced that it received this request.

«We are in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities on many topics, including energy issues. We look forward to discussing with our Ukrainian colleagues how best to move forward with their request for advice,» the agency's interlocutor replied when asked whether these consultations have started. The EU attaches great importance to the energy security of Ukraine, he also noted. «We remain fully available to discuss any issues of concern to Ukraine,» the EC representative concluded. Nord Stream 2 envisages the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is being implemented by Nord Stream 2 AG with the sole shareholder — Gazprom. The United States actively opposed the project, promoting its liquefied natural gas in the EU, as well as Ukraine and a number of other European countries. However, earlier the United States and Germany reached a number of agreements, including on Nord Stream 2.
