Tropical Storm Nicholas has already reached the Texas coast in the United States.
The storm reached the coast 30 kilometers from Houston, on the Matagorda Peninsula. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the wind speed dropped to 50 kilometers per hour, although initially the wind speed reached 110 kilometers per hour. Meteorologists predicted that about 51 centimeters of precipitation will fall in the state.
Previously, the storm will affect the same area that was flooded by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Storm Nicholas was the 14th Atlantic hurricane to get its name.
The storm moves over the state to the northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. The center of the storm is predicted to move from Texas to Louisiana, which was hit by Hurricane Ida.
Effects
According to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, local authorities prepared for the storm and concentrated rescue teams along the coast. The rains continue in Houston, which means that the city is under the threat of flooding. The streets were previously barricaded from water flows in the most vulnerable areas.
It is known that on Tuesday, that in the coastal areas of the state, the winds knocked down several trees, tore off the roofs and sheds at some gas stations. Several settlements have already been disconnected from electricity in the region. More than 300,000 homes were left without electricity in Houston, according to CenterPoint Energy.
Schools in communities along the Gulf Coast canceled classes on Monday due to a thunderstorm. Houston Schools announced the cancellation of classes on Tuesday, September 14.
Due to bad weather, several COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites in the Houston and Corpus Christi areas have been closed. Also canceled is a Harry Styles concert that was supposed to take place in Houston. The amount of precipitation in different regions ranges from 15 to 46 centimeters.
A tornado is possible along the upper coast of Texas and the southwest coast of Louisiana, according to the meteorological service.
