The Sovetsky District Court of Nizhny Novgorod fined Igor Kalyapin, a member of the Human Rights Council and chairman of the human rights project «Committee against Torture», 10 thousand rubles. This will be reported in the telegram channel of human rights defenders.
Kalyapin was found guilty of participation in the activities of an «undesirable organization» (Article 20.33 of the Administrative Code). He commented on his case in court as follows: “I really understand perfectly well why I became the object of this run over. Over the past year, I have harshly criticized both the work of the Investigative Committee and the work of the prosecutor's office. «
According to the prosecutor's office, which drew up a protocol against the human rights defender, Kalyapin participated in the activities of the Czech NGO “Man in Need” (Člověk v tísni), which provides human rights and humanitarian assistance.
A complaint against the human rights activist was written by Ilya Savinov from Nizhny Novgorod, a former member of the All-Russian Popular Front. Before that, he had already complained about independent journalists and political activists.
After Savinov's statement, the department found on the website of the Committee Against Torture references to “A Man in Need”, as well as links to the website of an NGO. All of them were published even before the Czech organization was recognized as “undesirable”.
