MOSCOW, 18 Sep. President of the Russian Cynological Federation Vladimir Golubev warned about the danger of playing dogs in autumn leaves — sharp objects can be hidden under them.
«Many dogs are very fond of autumn leaves. They play with them, dive into them with their heads or tear them with their nose. Owners need to be especially careful, while playing, the dog can get hurt. We are pleased to look at the colorful leaves, but we do not see that is under them, and there may be sharp objects, «Golubev told RIA Novosti.
According to him, shards of glass, wire, fittings or other dangerous objects can be hidden under the autumn leaves. He advised the owners to carefully inspect the walking areas and observe the animal during the game. Also, the dog handler advised to make sure that the dog does not find anything edible in the leaves, because it can become infected with helminths or catch an infectious disease, and in extreme cases, lose its life if he eats something planted by «doghunters».
«I urge the owners not to lose vigilance and closely monitor the pet while walking. If you notice that the dog is trying to pick up something from under the leaves, immediately take the object of interest from the dog,» Golubev said.
Another danger is fleas and ticks. According to the dog handler, it is a mistake to believe that insects are inactive during the fall. If the temperature drops below 5-10 degrees Celsius, they hibernate, but on warm days they can «come to life» and wait for victims in the autumn leaves. To avoid meeting with fleas and ticks, Golubev advises regularly treating the dog from parasites and carefully examining it after a walk.
