ALZHIR, 18 sep. Former President of Algeria Abdelaziz Bouteflika died at the age of 84, the office of the incumbent head of state Abdelmajid Tebun said.
In April 2019, Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, was forced to resign early due to protests. Former Prime Minister Abdelmajid Tebbun was elected the country's new president. Algeria's government resigns A political crisis erupted in Algeria in late February 2019 after 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika decided to run for a fifth presidential term despite health problems following a stroke in 2013. The country was engulfed in massive protests demanding radical changes in the government. Neither Bouteflika's promises to leave, nor the army's calls to declare the presidential post vacant could not quench popular discontent.
