Nutritionist Anna Kovalchuk spoke about the importance of iron in the body.
Iron is an indispensable trace element for humans, the main function of which is the transport of oxygen to tissues, organs, and body systems. Normally, the iron content in the human body is 3-5 grams.
Nutritionist Anna Kovalchuk on her Instagram page told what the lack of this trace element can lead to.
The specialist noted that children, pregnant and lactating women, elderly people, athletes, people suffering from heavy chronic bleeding need the greatest amounts of the trace element. Heme iron is found in animal products, and non-heme iron is found in plant foods.
Lack of iron in the body affects the general condition, is manifested by excessive fatigue and leads to the development of iron deficiency anemia. It is impossible to restore the normal level of iron in the body only from food. With iron deficiency anemia, the use of iron-containing drugs is indicated, in combination with nutrition. At the same time, it is important to drink these drugs between meals so as not to block the absorption of iron. However, even in the absence of anemia, iron deficiency leads to an exacerbation of chronic diseases and a decrease in working capacity.
It is noted that the most iron-containing foods are shellfish, meat offal, red meat, spinach, dark chocolate, cashews, beans, buckwheat, quinoa, and pomegranate.
