The cars that buy the most.
Automotive experts have identified the most popular cars in the world and made a rating of ten such cars.
British magazine Autoexpress analyzed data from 2020.
Toyota Corolla: 1,150,000 sales
The Toyota Corolla was the world's most popular car in 2019, and the reliable Japanese sedan continued to rank # 1 with over 1.1 million sales in 2020. Sales fell 8% year over year, but the Corolla maintained its lead in the global auto market, beating off a number of SUVs. Much of this success is attributed to the popularity of the car in the United States, despite declining American interest in sedans.
Toyota RAV4: 1,070,000 sales
Another Toyota ranked second in global sales is the RAV4 SUV. With the rise in popularity of midsize SUVs, the RAV4 gained 10% more sales than last year and narrowed the gap with the Corolla. Low operating costs, smooth ride and bold styling contribute to its success, and a new plug-in hybrid option has enhanced the RAV4's appeal.
Honda CR-V: 885,000 sales
The RAV4 is followed by another Japanese SUV, the Honda CR-V, which sold 885,000 units in 2020. Like the RAV4, the CR-V belongs to the large family SUV class, where it holds 12% of the total market share. The CR-V is well built, practical and well equipped, although it has poor fuel economy.
Nissan Sentra: 705,000 sales
The Nissan Sentra is especially popular in the US market. It occupies the same segment as the Corolla, with 705,000 sales from 5.1 million. Compared to last year, Sentra sales were up 3%, despite a 14% drop in compact sedan sales.
Toyota Camry: 635,000 sales
The Toyota Camry maintains Japanese dominance in the top five most popular cars with 635,000 sales. The Camry is the larger sibling of the Corolla sedan and has 20% market share in the D-segment. Like the Corolla, the Camry is popular with American customers for its generous interior space and durability.
Ford F-150: 620,000 sales
After spending many years at the top, the Ford F-150 remains one of the best-selling vehicles in the world. In 2020, it dropped from fourth to sixth. 620,000 units were sold. Unsurprisingly, the F-150 is hugely successful in the American market – becoming America's best-selling car for 40 consecutive years thanks to its combination of practicality, comfort and affordability.
Honda Civic: 560,000 sales
The Honda Civic competes in a class dominated by the aforementioned Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra, and sales have declined markedly last year. However, Honda sold 560,000 units, which put it comfortably in the top 10. The bright engines and practicality of the Civic have made the cars popular all over the world.
Honda HR-V: 560,000 sales
The HR-V is the third Honda model on this list. It ranks in the compact SUV class that ranked one of the best last year, albeit with a 1% overall decline in sales. Sales of the HR-V dropped 11%, but as buyers waited for the launch of an all-new hybrid model. Despite the antiquated infotainment system, the current HR-V offers a good price and plenty of space.
Chevrolet Silverado: 500,000 sales
The Chevrolet Silverado is one of only two American pickup trucks to make it into the top 10 of the year. The Silverado has long lagged behind the Ford F-150, but it has 500,000 sales, which is in line with its 2019 figures. Like Ford, Chevrolet wins over for its price, size and durability, making it a favorite with American buyers.
Honda Accord: 500,000 sales
The Honda Accord had 500,000 sales last year. It is inferior to the Toyota Camry in the big sedan class, but offers expressive styling and a pleasing infotainment system.
