Nutritionist told if detox programs work

It's better to just eat right.

Detox – procedures that various “specialists” in nutrition and health often supplement their programs for losing weight, cleansing the body, blood vessels and other organs.

Is it really possible to cleanse the body, and is there any evidence that these miraculous procedures will be beneficial and provide the declared effect, says a gastroenterologist, nutritionist, Ph.D. Oleg Shvets.

“In fact, most of the detox interventions have not been properly researched,” explains Oleg Shvets. – There are questions about their effectiveness.

According to the doctor, they can be risky and even harmful to health.

There are many detox diets . Some are based on fasting, others on drinking water. Some only allow fruits and vegetables.

These are usually rigid, low-calorie diets. They are designed for a short time , so they cannot give the desired effect: stay slim forever.

These diets have many side effects : headache, weakness, irritation, low blood sugar, muscle aches, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea.

Colon cleansing procedures and the use of any auxiliary means: tablets, herbs, powders are also dangerous.

Usually in such detox programs there is no physical activity, without which any method of losing weight is ineffective.

Such baby diets will help you to quickly lose a few pounds, but they will return, and will increase as soon as the diet is over.

“And various intensive interventions in order to cleanse the liver, blood vessels or intestines are really dangerous,” warns Oleg Shvets.

In addition, detox diets are contraindicated in people with certain medical conditions.

– There is not a single scientific study that would show that such a diet lowers blood pressure, cholesterol levels or has a positive effect on the heart, the doctor notes. “It's risky for people with diabetes.

Restricting food can lead to a dangerous drop in blood sugar when you are taking diabetes medications.

If you want to go for a healthy diet, try focusing on vegetables, fruits , whole grains, and lean protein.

Limit or eliminate processed foods that are high in salt, fat, and sugar.

This diet is suitable for people with high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and has long lasting results.
