Russian billionaire physicist Valentin Gapontsev dies in the US

In the United States, billionaire physicist Valentin Gapontsev died after a long illness. This is reported by Forbes, citing a source, the information to the publication was confirmed by the billionaire's son Denis.

Gapontsev was 82 years old. The exact cause of death has not been reported; Forbes writes that the billionaire has been battling cancer for several years.

Gapontsev was a co-owner of IPG Photonics. He became one of the first entrepreneurs in the fields of laser physics and technology, fiber and optoelectronic technology.

Together with Alexander Shestakov, an employee of the Research Institute Polyus of the Ministry of Electronic Industry, Gapontsev created OOO NTO IRE-Polyus, which later became part of IPG Photonics. At IRE-Polyus, the scientist developed a concept for creating quantum optical generators based on a new technological platform. Thanks to her, high-performance laser phosphate glasses were introduced into mass production, fiber lasers and amplifiers were created, and the production of fiber-optic fixed communication systems was organized.

At the end of 2018, Gapontsev filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury Department for including him in the so-called “Kremlin report”, which included the names of 210 Russian businessmen, officials and politicians with a fortune of more than a billion dollars. According to the American authorities, these are people close to President Vladimir Putin. Subsequently, Gapontsev and the US Treasury concluded an amicable agreement.
