Australia to open borders for the first time in a year and a half

The country's borders are open to fully vaccinated Australian citizens and their immediate family.

Sydney Airport received the first scheduled international passenger flight in 590 days. The plane, which arrived on Monday from Los Angeles, opened a program to restore flights between Australia and the rest of the world.

Now, according to the Australian Foreign Ministry, about 47 thousand citizens and permanent residents of the country have received the right to enter.

The restrictions imposed by the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were in effect for 18 months. In accordance with them, Australians staying abroad, with rare exceptions, did not have the opportunity to return to their homeland or go abroad.

A limited number of citizens and permanent residents were allowed to return from abroad with a mandatory 14-day quarantine period at the hotel at their own expense.

Since November 1, the country's borders are open to fully vaccinated Australian citizens and their immediate family, however, quarantine entry is allowed only in two regions (the states of New South Wales and Victoria), and international flights are operated only through the airports of Sydney and Melbourne.

It is planned that from December 1, non-quarantine entry will also be allowed in the Northern Territory of the country through the Darwin International Airport. Foreign nationals remain prohibited from entering Australia.
