The uniqueness of the experiment was that it was short-lived, so the scientists got their hands on the first generation of flies. “The first generation was fundamentally important for us. We conducted a study related to the assessment of sperm motility, the rate of oxygen uptake by the cells of the male reproductive system, now we are working to analyze the protein composition of sperm,” Ogneva said. In total, ten pairs were sent into space fly larvae that hatched on the third day of the flight grew up and gave birth to offspring in space. About 500-600 flies returned to Earth in four test tubes. The preliminary results of the study will become known in the next two to three months.
