Another mass school shooting made headlines in American news. Ethan Crumbley, 15, a high school student in Oxford, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, shot and killed four students (two boys and two girls aged 14 to 17) and injured seven more. President Joe Biden extended his condolences to the students and their families. This tragedy attracted the attention of the entire country, seemingly accustomed to such “incidents” by two unusual circumstances.

“Glaring details”

First, Oakland County Attorney Karen MacDonald charged the suspected killer with terrorism, in addition to the duty charges: four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with the intent of murder, and twelve counts of possession of a firearm in a felony. Ethan Crumbley had no right to take out of the house weapons inscribed in his father's name. But at the same time in Michigan there is no law that requires gun owners to keep weapons out of the reach of children. The arrested teenager, who surrendered to the police, as the district judge said, while keeping silent, pleads not guilty. He is being held in the county jail and has been denied bail. Despite his young age, he was charged as an adult.

Under Michigan law, he faces life imprisonment with no parole for first-degree murder.

In 2012, the US Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional life imprisonment for juvenile offenders without the ability to get out of prison. However, a Michigan court could still give Crumbley a life sentence.

Second unusual circumstance: The Michigan attorney charged four counts of manslaughter on parents the accused – Jennifer and James Crumbley.

They bought a firearm for their son – a semi-automatic pistol as a Christmas present.

This tragedy could have been prevented, the American media say. James Crumbley absolutely legally bought the Sig Sauer SP 2022 9mm semi-automatic pistol on Friday, November 26th. On the same day, the suspect posted photographs of the weapon on the Internet, calling it his “new beauty.” The next day, his mother wrote on social networks: “Mom and son are checking a new Christmas present.” Judging by my mother’s statement, it was a pistol, ”said prosecutor MacDonald. Already on Tuesday, the son defused the weapon at his peers.
