Zhytomyr court fined man for pirated versions of video games on PlayStation

Sony has not filed copyright infringement charges.

Court Zhitomir ordered the man to pay a fine of 21 thousand hryvnia. He was accused of installing pirated video games on a console from the PlayStation series, Chronicle.info reports with reference to Channel 24.

Almost a year ago, we talked about a Japanese seller of modified Pokemon who was caught red-handed by the police. And already in July, about a local criminal group that was engaged in modifying the saves for the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This time a resident of Zhytomyr became the main character of a similar story.

It is worth starting with the fact that law enforcement agencies detained this man back in December 2020, and accused him of unauthorized interference with the operation of electronic computers in order to falsify information. To put it simply, he was engaged in & # 171; reflashing & # 187; consoles from the PlayStation series, and has advertised its services on a variety of well-known platforms.

According to the unified state register of court decisions, he indicated in his announcements that he could install a variety of games on the console. It should be added that we are talking about unlicensed video games that he downloaded from pirate sites. For his work, he used a personal computer and a set of programs for & # 171; reflashing & # 187; PlayStation.

This document also refers to the video games he installed on consoles: Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, Skyrim, Mortal Kombat, FIFA, Far Cry 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It is clear that these are very popular games, however, there is only one project on this list, which can be called a PlayStation exclusive. And all other video games have always been available on personal computers. It should be added that Sony has not filed charges of copyright infringement.

The defendant pleaded guilty, so he should have already paid a fine of UAH 10,000. He also had to pay 11 thousand more hryvnias as compensation for carrying out forensic computer examinations. Finally, it is worth noting that the document does not indicate how the police found out about his offenses. It is very likely that this happened due to the publication of ads on well-known platforms.
