The main threat to the heart on New Year's holidays is named

MOSCOW, 21 Dec. On the eve of the New Year, Australian cardiologists drew attention to the features of the so-called holiday heart syndrome. Researchers analyzed data from 408,000 participants from the British Biobank to find out how alcohol affects the heart. Almost a third of Russians do not drink alcohol, the survey showed “We sought to clarify the relationship between alcohol consumption and two types of cardiovascular disease: ventricular fibrillation, which is often a life-threatening heart rhythm disorder; and sudden cardiac death, which was believed to be is caused by loss of heart function and can be triggered by ventricular fibrillation, ”explained Christopher H. Wong, lead researcher at the Center for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the University of Adelaide. Researchers observed a“ U-shaped relationship ”between alcohol consumption and the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) that consistent with previous scientific work. This is surprising, however, since it is believed that cases of sudden cardiac death are most often caused by ventricular fibrillation. Although this problem can sometimes cause SCD, not all cases of SCD are triggered by ventricular fibrillation. In fact, some SCD actually result from conditions other than the heart, and this may explain that alcohol affects these similar pathologies in different ways. “Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of sudden cardiac death. It is generally good for the heart, which is consistent with previous evidence that excess alcohol even increases the likelihood of myocardial infarction, demonstrating that “more is not better,” the scientists concluded. Research: more than half of Russians will not work on holidays
