On Friday, December 31, three of the six nuclear power plants operating in Germany shut down. The rest are to be decommissioned next year. Germany decided to abandon nuclear energy in 2002 under Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. After the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011, the government of Angela Merkel confirmed this plan.
