Russia sent airborne troops to Kazakhstan as part of the mission of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This was reported by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, with reference to the organization's secretariat.

«The main tasks of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the CSTO will be the protection of important state and military facilities, assistance to the forces of law and order of the Republic of Kazakhstan in stabilizing the situation and returning it to the legal field», — stated in the secretariat.
Thus, the CSTO mission in Kazakhstan has officially begun. In addition to Russia, other members of the organization sent their armed forces to Kazakhstan: Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
On January 5, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev addressed the leaders of the countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) with a request to «provide assistance to Kazakhstan in overcoming the terrorist threat.» After that, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that she had made a decision to send “collective peacekeeping forces” to Kazakhstan “for a limited time period in order to stabilize and normalize the situation in this country.”
