Earthquake hits southern Armenia


YEREVAN, Jan 9 An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 occurred on Sunday evening near the town of Kapan, Syunik regions in the south of Armenia, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the country reported. «On January 9, at 23.19 (22.19 Moscow time), the seismic protection service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 near the Armenian-Azerbaijani border zone, 9 kilometers from the city of Kapan (300 kilometers south of Yerevan — ed.). The earthquake source lay at a depth of 10 kilometers, «the ministry's website says. It is noted that the strength of the tremors at the epicenter was 3-4 points. The earthquake was felt in the city of Kapan with a magnitude of 3 points, Kajaran and Meghri — 2-3 points.
