Kuwait CityMOSCOW, Jan 17One of the world's largest oil producers, Kuwait, is becoming uninhabitable due to global warming and the authorities' unwillingness to cut emissions, Bloomberg reported. Last year, the country's air temperature broke the 50-degree mark in June — weeks before the heat wave peaked. According to forecasts by the State Environmental Protection Agency, the average temperature in the country in 2071-2100 will be 4.5 degrees above the climatic norm, which will make the territory uninhabitable. Wildlife is already under threat: birds die in summer, unable to find water and shade, and mammals get heatstroke. In addition, wild animals come to the cities, unable to find greenery in their natural habitat. «We see fewer and fewer wild animals in Kuwait because most of them do not survive the seasons,» explained veterinarian Tamara Kabazard.Russian scientist predicted a global catastrophe in the coming years Kuwait ranks fourth in oil exports to OPEC, and it is not a lack of funds that prevents the country from reducing emissions, but the inaction of the authorities. Moreover, other states of the Middle East have committed themselves to combating global warming: the UAE intends to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Saudi Arabia — by 2060. Kuwait also promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 by only 7.4% — several times less the minimum required amount. Local residents, in turn, do not suffer from the climate: they travel by private cars, which account for a large part of emissions, and air conditioners are installed in all premises in the country. Public transport in Kuwait is used almost exclusively by migrants. Moreover, despite the ban on working in the summer outdoors in the afternoon, guest workers are often forced to violate this restriction.
