Russia ranked 136th in the Corruption Perceptions Index. On the same line were Angola, Liberia and Mali

In 2021, Russia dropped several positions to rank 136 out of 180 in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The corresponding study was published by the international organization Transparency International*.

Experts assessed the level of perception of corruption in the public sector on a 100-point scale. Russia scored 29 points out of 100 possible. The researchers found the same indicators in Angola, Liberia and Mali.

A year earlier, Russia scored 30 points and took 133rd place. This was the highest score since 2012, when Transparency began using the 100-point scale for research.

The leaders of the ranking in 2021 were Denmark, Finland and New Zealand, with 88 points each. Somalia, Syria (13 points each) and South Sudan (11 points) took the lowest places in the ranking.

The Transparency report says the «foreign agents» law that affects the organization has made it more dangerous to expose corruption. Summing up the results of 2021 in Russia, the researchers recalled that “the authorities raided the apartments and offices of journalists and activists investigating corruption in the state apparatus and declared them “foreign agents”, imposing extremely burdensome financial reporting duties on them and limiting their ability to for publications.
