CanadaWASHINGTON, Jan 25 Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov called «hysteria» and » absurd» attempts to attribute to Russia a hacker attack on the Canadian Foreign Ministry. The local Global News channel previously reported a cyber attack on the computer networks of the Canadian Foreign Ministry, while anonymous sources of the channel did not rule out the involvement in the hacking of «Russia or hackers supported by it.» «The situation with the demonization of Russia has gone so far that any event taking place in the world that cannot be attributed to someone immediately falls on Russia, because this is a win-win technique in the Western media and political circles,» Stepanov told RIA Novosti. «This is just hysteria, a self-produced anti-Russian Western propaganda… Attributing to us some kind of malicious intent in the form of cyber attacks is simply absurd,» he added. Last week, Canadian intelligence services turned to operators of critical infrastructure facilities with a warning about cyber threats allegedly coming from Russia, and a call to increase the resistance of networks to hacker attacks. «We regret to see recent attempts by various forces in Canada to ascribe to Russia a malicious cybernetic orientation against the Canadian side,» Stepanov said. «Russia is not engaged in illegal wrecking activities in cyberspace. On the contrary, Russia is the leader of international efforts to strengthen cooperation between all states in the fight against threats to international information security,» he added. The Russian Federation has repeatedly rejected Western accusations of cyber attacks, calling them unfounded, and has also stated that it is ready to cooperate on cyber security. The Netherlands wanted to help Ukraine in repelling «Russian cyber attacks»
