Bloomberg: Putin supports regulation of mining and cryptocurrencies instead of total ban

President Vladimir Putin supports the proposal for state regulation of mining and cryptocurrencies. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

According to the interlocutors, Putin supported the proposal to limit mining to regions “with an excess of electricity” – Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk and Karelia – and rejected the Central Bank’s initiative to completely ban cryptocurrencies in Russia.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment and noted that Putin asked the government and the Central Bank to resolve differences. The press services of the government and the Central Bank have not yet responded to the requests of the agency.

Co-founder of the Russian miner BitCluster Vitaly Borshchenko said that the miners were invited to join the government working group after the publication of the report of the Central Bank.

For the first time about a possible ban on cryptocurrencies in Russia became known on January 20. Then Bloomberg, citing sources, claimed that the FSB convinced the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, to completely ban any operations with cryptocurrencies in Russia. On the same day, the regulator published a report criticizing cryptocurrencies and proposed to ban any transactions with them in Russia.

The Ministry of Finance in response called not to ban cryptocurrencies, but to “regulate” them. In particular, to conduct all transactions through Russian banks and track the owners of crypto wallets. The proposal was supported by the FSB and Rosfinmonitoring.
