On January 23, Sargsyan announced his resignation. The main reason he pointed out was the lack of proper powers that do not allow the head of state to influence the fundamental processes of foreign and domestic policy. The head of parliament Alen Simonyan said on January 24 that, in accordance with the regulations of the legislative body, if an official does not withdraw his resignation within a week, then a protocol is drawn up on the termination of his powers, which is signed and published by the speaker. The president of the republic is elected by the parliament for seven years. The same person can be elected president only once. At least one quarter of the total number of deputies has the right to nominate a candidate. According to the constitution, the President submits his resignation to the National Assembly. The resignation is considered accepted from the moment of its promulgation in the manner prescribed by law.
