Novaya Gazeta columnist Elena Milashina on the air of the “Rain” said that she decided to leave Russia after the threats of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov.
According to the journalist, she «will leave the Russian Federation for some time, as has happened many times before.»
“My editor-in-chief and my rather high-ranking sources insist on this, who say that now the threat to my personal safety is high. Therefore, I will listen to them, although I really don’t like it,” Milashina added.
Milashina covered in Novaya Gazeta the conflict between Ramzan Kadyrov and the family of the former Chechen judge Saydi Yangulbaev, whose son the Chechen authorities associated with the opposition Telegram -channel 1ADAT. Kadyrov called the Yangulbaevs «terrorists», and Yelena Milashina, Novaya Gazeta, the Dozhd channel, as well as the human rights defenders from the Committee Against Torture, who defended the interests of the Yangulbaevs — «accomplices of terrorists.»
Earlier, when he wrote on his Telegram channel about Novaya Gazeta and Elena Milashina, Kadyrov also added: “We have always destroyed terrorists and their accomplices, between whom there is no difference, and we will continue to do this with them in the future.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the presidential administration «would not want to interfere» in the conflict.
«Tear off your heads, work on you, kill you.» The head of Chechnya and the deputy of the State Duma again threaten the family of a retired judge
In 2015, Judge Yangulbaev and his sons were detained and taken to Kadyrov's residence because of the judge's son Ibragim's criticism of the republic's authorities on VKontakte. The Yangulbaevs said they were beaten and Saydi Yangulbaev was forced to resign.
In January 2022, Chechen policemen arrived at Yangulbaev's home in Nizhny Novgorod and took the judge's wife to Chechnya under the pretext of interrogation. There she was arrested. The younger son of Yangulbaev was put on the wanted list on charges of justifying terrorism on the 1ADAT telegram channel, which talks about kidnappings and torture in the republic, and also criticizes Kadyrov and his entourage.
The Yangulbaevs left Russia, and the Supreme Court of Chechnya stripped a retired judge of immunity. On February 2, a rally was held in Grozny, where several thousand participants burned and trampled on the portraits of the Yangulbaevs. They accused the judge's son Ibragim of insulting well-known Sufi preachers in an audio recording posted by the Chechen television channel Grozny. They didn't mention the link to 1ADAT.
