Former US Ambassador to Russia says Ukraine has no right to join NATO

MOSCOW, 9 Feb. Ukraine has no right to join the North Atlantic Alliance without the consent of all the states in the bloc, former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul tweeted.

"Let me clarify. Ukraine does not have the right to join NATO. NATO is not obliged to accept Ukraine",” the diplomat wrote.

According to him, Kiev needs to earn membership in a military alliance, as well as obtain the consent of all countries of the bloc. In December 2014, the Verkhovna Rada amended two laws, refusing from the non-bloc status of Kiev. In February 2019, the Ukrainian parliament adopted amendments to the constitution, securing the republic's course towards the European Union and NATO. As Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, stated, in order to join the alliance, Kiev will need to achieve a number of criteria, the implementation of which will take a lot of time. 16:12Russia arranged a tactical puzzle for NATO, writes 19Fortyfive
