Irish Navitas Semiconductor, which develops ultra-fast chargers for smartphones, creates a similar charger for electric vehicles, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to RBC-Ukraine.
The company uses gallium nitride (GaN) in its developments. This semiconductor works 20 times faster than silicon, and devices based on it provide three times more power and 3 times faster charging. At the same time, the weight and size of the charger will be half as much, which is very convenient for home stations.

If the new technology is used in the electric car itself, the range will increase by almost 30%, or by the same size and weight can be reduced.
Gallium nitride charging technology is relatively new and still 10 to 20 percent more expensive than silicon counterparts, but as production increases, it can be profitable, say the developers .
The fact that Navitas Semiconductor opened a center in Shanghai (China) in January of this year, for close cooperation with electric vehicle manufacturers in the development of GaN charging systems, testifies to the seriousness of the company's intentions.
Over the last three Navitas shipped over 35 million GaN devices to major customers such as smartphone maker Vivo, Dell, and consumer electronics giant Xiaomi. And power electronics supplier for Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen, BRUSA HyPower, has publicly announced a partnership with Navitas.
