MedicinesMOSCOW, 10 Feb. Long-term use of paracetamol increases the risk of heart disease and stroke in patients with high blood pressure. This is with reference to data from a study by specialists from the University of Edinburgh, the journal Circulation reports. Participation in the study involved 110 volunteers with a history of high blood pressure. For two weeks, some of them took paracetamol four times a day, while others took a placebo. Patients received both types of treatment in a randomized and blind order. At the same time, two-thirds of the subjects also drank drugs for hypertension. As a result, it was found that, on average, the subjects had an increase in blood pressure. According to experts, regular use of paracetamol can be expected to increase the risk of heart disease or stroke by about 20 percent. After people stopped taking the drug, their blood pressure returned to the level it was at the beginning of the study. that taking paracetamol can exacerbate liver disease. In addition, the drug can cause an allergic skin rash with red, itchy, swollen, blistered, or flaky skin. Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is widely used to reduce fever and for mild to moderate pain. It blocks cyclooxygenase in the central nervous system, affecting the centers of pain and thermoregulation. The anti-inflammatory effect is practically absent. Paracetamol is included in the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization, as well as in the Russian list of vital and essential drugs.
