From 1977 to 1986, Alexander Sidorenko became the champion of the USSR in individual swimming 20 times. In 1980, at the Moscow Olympics, he won gold in the 400 m individual medley. He became the world and European champion in the 200 m individual medley, as well as the author of the world record for this distance (2 minutes 05.24 seconds). In 1979, Sidorenko was recognized as the best swimmer of the USSR.
