MOSCOW, 10 Mar. The Russian Football Union (RFU) has extended the contract with the head coach of the Russian national team Valery Karpin, according to the RFU website. The new agreement with the 53-year-old specialist is calculated until the end of 2022. In addition, Karpin will combine the position of head coach in the Russian national team and Rostov.
"I am glad to have the opportunity to continue working with the Russian national team. I hope that very soon our football will return to the international arena and we will be able to participate in official matches again. I am grateful to the leaders of the RFU and the football club "Rostov", who in the current situation agreed on the possibility of combining work in the national team and in the club", said Karpin.
Karpin led the Russian team in July 2021 after his resignation Stanislav Cherchesov. The first contract of the specialist, calculated initially until the end of last year, was automatically extended until the end of March. Earlier, FIFA and UEFA issued a joint statement according to which Russian teams and clubs were suspended from participation in all international competitions for an indefinite period due to the situation in Ukraine. The RFU filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). On Thursday, it became known that UEFA and FIFA denied the RFU an expedited procedure for considering the case in CAS. The Russian men's team was supposed to play with the Polish team in Moscow on March 24 in the semi-finals of the play-off tournament for reaching the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the other semi-final, the teams of Sweden and the Czech Republic will meet. The winner of the tournament will qualify for the World Championship, which will be held from November 21 to December 18 in Qatar.
