Evgeny Inkin was acquitted in the case of murder, Dmitry Istomin was acquitted in Group murder, kidnappingand attempted murder, but was given two years probation for storage of weapons. Alexander Popov was also acquitted in the case of kidnappingand attempted murder.

Mediazona spoke in detail about this case. The police were charged with the murder of 17-year-old Evgenia Shekunova and 18-year-old Ekaterina Pateyuk, as well as the kidnapping and attempted murder of 15-year-old Ekaterina Ponomareva, committed in 2002 near the Buryat village of Seleginsk in an area called Cranberry Pad.

There were no suspects in the case for 17 years, but in 2019 Ponomareva testified and the Investigative Committee announced the arrest of the pensioner of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Inkin and the current employee of the district department Istomin. Ponomareva said that on the day of the murder she went with the policemen and the dead to rest in nature.

According to the witness, Pateyuk “jokingly” said that she was sick with a venereal disease, which made Istomin angry, because, presumably, he had previously had sex with her. Then Ponomareva went to the toilet.

“First, Katya screamed, then Zhenya screamed, she said, don’t, I’m afraid of pain and that’s it. And silence immediately. And I didn’t come back,” she told TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak.

The witness claimed that two months after the death of Shekunova and Pateyuk, Inkin tried to drown her in the lake with policeman Alexander Popov, but was “distracted” and didn't finish what he started.
