UN Security Council meeting. File photoUN, Mar 24 US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield believes that the UN Security Council resolution is not needed to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians. Earlier, the UN Security Council did not accept the Russian draft humanitarian resolution. Only the Russian Federation and China voted for it, the rest of the UN Security Council members abstained.
"We don't need this farcical resolution to provide humanitarian assistance. The United States has provided more than $600 million in humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people, and we will continue to provide as much assistance as needed to Ukraine and neighboring countries that host Ukrainians,» Thomas-Greenfield said.
Earlier, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the organization, Vasily Nebenzya, said that the refusal of the UN Security Council to adopt a humanitarian resolution of the Russian Federation would allow Kiev to continue to use people as human shields and deploy heavy weapons near civilian infrastructure. According to the draft resolution of the Russian Federation that was not adopted today, the Security Council calls » to a negotiated ceasefire to ensure the prompt, safe, voluntary and unhindered evacuation of all civilians.» At the same time, the Security Council emphasizes the need for the parties to agree on humanitarian pauses for this purpose, the text says. The document, a copy of which is available to RIA Novosti, also states that the UN Security Council requires the full protection of civilians, including humanitarian personnel and people in vulnerable situations, including women and children.
Nebenzia commented on the results of the vote on the Russian UN resolution. In addition, the text calls not to use civilian infrastructure to host military installations, and not to install them in densely populated areas. According to the draft, the Security Council requires all parties to ensure the protection of all medical and humanitarian personnel, their vehicles and equipment, hospitals and other medical institutions. The project calls on all parties to allow safe and unhindered travel outside Ukraine, including for foreign citizens without discrimination, and to facilitate the safe and unhindered access of humanitarian aid to those in need in and around Ukraine. Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24 . President Vladimir Putin called its goal «the protection of people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.» For this, according to him, it is planned to carry out «demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine», to bring to justice all war criminals responsible for «bloody crimes against civilians» in Donbass. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Armed Forces strike only at the military infrastructure and Ukrainian troops. With the support of the Russian Armed Forces, the DPR and LPR groups are developing an offensive, but there is no talk of the occupation of Ukraine, the Russian president emphasized.
