Attackers, as indicated, sent letters to employees with malicious links. According to them, users were redirected to a site that requested their username and password. One of them was sent from a hacked account of a government official. «The phishing attacks … had the characteristics of a coordinated, ongoing effort targeting election officials,» the release said. Similar emails were sent to election officials in nine different states. The FBI did not comment on who might be behind these attacks, but noted that cybercrime activity could increase ahead of mid-term elections for the Senate, House of Representatives, and elections for several governors in November.
