The State Duma asks to ban the import of radioactive waste from unfriendly countries

MOSCOW, March 29 State Duma deputy Mikhail Matveev (KPRF) sent a request to the RF Cabinet of Ministers a request to consider the possibility of banning the import of «radioactive waste» from unfriendly countries into Russia as part of retaliatory sanctions. In the request, the text of which is posted on Matveev's Telegram channel, the politician asks to be informed whether radioactive waste from unfriendly countries — if so, from which, to what extent and to which enterprises. this is prohibited by law. Russia imports for storage and subsequent processing spent nuclear fuel (SNF) produced in the Russian Federation and used at foreign nuclear power plants built according to domestic projects. This ensures the non-proliferation regime. In its SNF management activities, Russia is guided by international treaties to which it is a party. The import of SNF into Russia is regulated by federal laws. SNF is not considered waste, but a valuable raw material, the processing of which makes it possible to isolate materials that are then used in nuclear energy, as well as in other areas, including nuclear medicine and industry, and to minimize the volume of radioactive waste. There are other areas of joint work. In particular, Moscow is cooperating with Paris on the supply of regenerated uranium to Russia, which is planned to be processed and further used in the nuclear power industry of the Russian Federation, which will reduce the environmental burden of the nuclear industry.December 22, 2021, 15:20 Lukashenko announced the need to revive the lands of the Chernobyl zone
