MOSCOW, April 5 Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev called «the position of an adequate athlete» the opinion of the Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, who doubted the fidelity of the decision of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to remove the Russian Sergey Karyakin from the competition. Earlier, FIDE disqualified Karjakin for six months for publicly supporting the special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, depriving him of the opportunity to speak at the tournament contenders for the chess crown. The current world champion Carlsen doubted the correctness of the decision to disqualify the Russian for «an opinion that differs from another.»
"Carlsen's position is the position of an adequate athlete. No athlete can be suspended for their position, and what happened to Karjakin is a flagrant violation of rights. Sergey made the right decision to challenge the suspension in the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport. — Approx. ed.), such things cannot be accepted. I would like to believe that FIDE will sooner or later realize the fallacy of its decisions. Like other international federations that suspended our athletes for political reasons", Svishchev told reporters.
