St. Petersburg, April 6, Taras Barabash. A representative of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) said that if Russian grandmaster Sergey Karyakin continues to violate the organization's code of ethics, then new charges may be brought against him. Previously, FIDE suspended Karjakin for six months for publicly supporting Russia's special operation in Ukraine, the opportunity to compete in the Candidates' Tournament for the Chess Crown.
"Karjakin has until April 11 to file an appeal. He has not used this right yet. These sanctions (disqualification. — Ed.) against Karjakin cannot be extended in principle. But if the player persists in violating the code of conduct in the future, there is a possibility that new charges will be brought against him", the FIDE representative said.
