ATHENS, Apr 6Greek trade unions held two rallies in the center of Athens on Wednesday against high prices, for higher wages and against the involvement of Greece in events in Ukraine. On Wednesday, a 24-hour strike takes place in the country, in which the largest trade unions participate: public sector workers (ADEDI), private sector — The General Confederation of Labor of Greece (GSEE), the communist trade union General Fighting Front (PAME). Public transport does not work in Greece — metro, trams and trolleybuses, as well as trains and commuter trains. Buses run from 9 am to 9 pm. The ferry service to the islands has been stopped. Employees of state institutions, hospitals, insurance funds, and municipalities are participating in the strike. The Union of Journalists of Athens Daily Newspapers ESIEA holds a four-hour strike from 12.00 to 16.00. Airlines operate flights as usual, as the court, at the suit of the Civil Aviation Administration, declared the strike of air traffic controllers and technicians illegal. Supporters of PAME gathered on the central Athens Syntagma Square. They called for intensifying the struggle against high prices and for higher wages, as well as for collective labor agreements. According to trade unions, only collective agreements can protect workers from the arbitrariness of employers. Members of the trade unions GSEE and ADEDY held a rally a few hundred meters away on Klaftmonas Square.
