«There must be consequences»: Azarenka on suspension from Wimbledon

MOSCOW, April 29 Belarusian Victoria Azarenka called senseless the decision of the organizers of the Wimbledon tournament to remove from the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and called on the leadership of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) to take action. Last week, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) refused Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in Wimbledon due to the situation in Ukraine. Also, players from Russia and Belarus were banned from playing at grass tournaments in the UK under the auspices of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). «When a decision is made, there should be consequences. The WTA should respond to the decision of the organizers of Wimbledon. If you ask me if I agree with their arguments, then I will not agree with them. The decision does not make any sense. It is not related to what they say. I think that appropriate measures should follow. I have clearly expressed my position on this issue,» Azarenka said at a press conference after winning the first round match at the tournament in Madrid, Reuters cites her words. The Wimbledon tennis tournament will be held from June 27 to July 10. Russian and Belarusian tennis players are allowed to ATP and WTA tournaments in a neutral status in all countries except the UK.
