Turkmenistan, along with other union republics of the former USSR , made a great contribution to achieving victory in the Great Patriotic War. More than 180 thousand Turkmen citizens fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, which amounted to more than 10% of the total population of the republic. More than 70 thousand fighters from Turkmenistan were awarded orders and medals, 104 of them were awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and 15 people became full holders of the Order of Glory.
