The Su-25 attack aircraft of Major Filipov was shot down by terrorists in 2018 when he flew around the Idlib de-escalation zone. The pilot tried to keep the attack aircraft in the air to the last and managed to report to the command about the attack. After ejection, Filipov landed in an olive grove near the militant-controlled village of Sarakib. Until the last minutes of his life, he fought an unequal battle with regular weapons and did not let the terrorists. Surrounded by militants, when the distance to them was reduced to several tens of meters, the seriously wounded Filipov blew himself up with a grenade. Earlier, a memorial plaque was erected at the place of his death. «It is our duty. It is our sacred duty to honor the memory of such people. Those people who immensely raised the authority of the Russian officer corps throughout the world. I am proud that today I am not far from the line of contact, despite for everything, we managed to hold this event,» Colonel Andrey Fedorov, a Russian military group in Syria, told journalists.
