Representatives of the Moldovan authorities are unsuccessfully trying to start the process of unifying the country with neighboring Romania, Senator of the Federation Council Alexei Pushkov wrote on Telegram. This is how the politician commented on polling data showing that more than half of the inhabitants of the former Soviet republic oppose the abandonment of the country's independence. «The pro-Romanian elite of Moldova cannot achieve at least the appearance of the majority it needs to start the process of joining the country to Romania,» Pushkov said. The politician noted that although the unionists were able to win over a certain proportion of the population of the former Soviet republic , most of the inhabitants understand that if Moldova joins Romania, the now independent state will turn into a deep province of another country. In 1918, Romania sent troops into the territory of modern Moldova, and the Council of the Territory created in Chisinau voted for unification with a neighboring country. Since June 1940, the territory of modern Moldova has not been part of Romania. In both countries, there are supporters of the idea of unionism — the unification of Moldova as a state. According to opinion polls, more than 50 percent of the population of the former Soviet republic is against such a scenario.
