In early April, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis announced that the country was lowering the level of diplomatic relations with Russia, and was also returning its ambassador from Moscow. The diplomatic department also announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Klaipeda and asked the ambassador to leave the territory of the Baltic republic.
