File photoBRUSSELS, May 16.The EU expects from Serbia that it, as a candidate for the European Union, will join the union's sanctions against Russia, said the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers following negotiations with the ministers of six states of the Western Balkans. «We welcome the bold choice of those states that fully join our foreign policy and sanctions… Ministers said they expect their partners, future EU members, to adhere to European values and EU foreign policy… Those who have not yet done so, including Serbia, should implement the sanctions as soon as possible,» he said. «We expect candidates, our partners to fully adhere to our foreign policy,» Borrell added. The head of EU diplomacy expressed the position that maintaining strong ties with the Russian leadership «is no longer compatible with building a common future with the European Union.» April thanked the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov for understanding why Serbia voted to suspend Russia's participation in the UN Human Rights Council, and the EU leadership to exclude Belgrade from restrictions on oil supplies. Earlier, the UN General Assembly voted to suspend Russia's participation in the Council on human rights because of the events in Ukraine. Serbia, among others, supported the resolution. The decision deprived the Russian Federation of the right to vote and the right to speak in the Council. In response, Russia announced that it was terminating its powers in the HRC. In an address to fellow citizens on March 2, the President of Serbia said that the Serbian authorities supported 4 out of 13 points of the UN resolution condemning the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine — those that do not involve sanctions and the alienation of property of Russian companies in the country.
