Hungarian President Katalin Novak on Friday published a post on social networks, saying that she assumes the functions of the representative of all Hungarians, regardless of where they live, inside or outside Hungary.» The Romanian Foreign Ministry contacted at the level of Secretary of State for European Affairs with the Hungarian Ambassador to Romania and conveyed to the Romanian side the concerns about the statement as follows: since the statements of the President of Hungary on a private visit to Romania also apply to Romanian citizens of Hungarian nationality, it should be emphasized that, according to international law , the state cannot claim its rights of any kind under attitude towards citizens of another state,» the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The ministry stressed that such statements do not comply «neither with European standards in this matter, nor with the spirit of the Treaty of Understanding, Cooperation and Good Neighborliness between Romania and the Republic of Hungary (signed in Timisoara on September 16 1996) and the Declaration on a Strategic Partnership between the Government of Romania and the Republic of Hungary for the Europe of the 21st Century (adopted in Budapest on November 29, 2002)». The Foreign Ministry notes that it still intends to develop pragmatic relations with Hungary in the direct interests of Romanian and Hungarian citizens, regardless of their ethnicity.
