The American technology company Sandvine, which will supply Internet service providers with equipment for «deep packet inspection» (Deep Packet Inspection, DPI), left Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine. Bloomberg was told about this in the press service of the company.
For Russian Internet providers, Roskomnadzor installs the «Technical means of countering threats» (TPSU) — DPI equipment is also used for the operation of this system. RKN uses this technology for censorship under the sovereign internet» — learns, slows down or completely ogres reduces user traffic.
Previously, Sandvine supplied equipment for MegaFon and Tele2. A spokesman for Sandvine told Bloomberg that it was only used in Russia «for billing and improving the quality of service» and not for internet blocking.
At the same time, the agency, citing unnamed sources, writes that even before Sandvine left the Russian market, some employees expressed concern that the company's technologies could be used to censor the Internet, and from its official website, according to the publication, removed at least three articles about its business ties to Russia.
Bloomberg notes that the US Department of Commerce has recently developed regulations that will control the export of «deep packet analysis» equipment to keep national security sensitive technologies out of the «dangerous hands».
