File photoBRUSSELS, Jun 6 The European Union welcomes Turkey's «constructive role» in the Ukraine conflict, but would like more decisive steps to support Ankara's European position, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi said. «Turkey's active diplomacy and solidarity with Ukraine is very important, including efforts to achieve a ceasefire. We welcome Turkey's constructive role aimed at de-escalating the conflict… At the same time, we call on Turkey to take more decisive steps to join the EU position, we expect from Turkey to be especially vigilant in terms of preventing the circumvention of sanctions,» Varheli said, speaking at the European Parliament. Sweden and Finland threaten to join NATOThe EU countries over the past three months have already introduced six packages of sanctions against Russia because of the situation in Ukraine. The sixth package agreed last week provides for a phased introduction of a ban on the purchase of oil and oil products from the Russian Federation transported by sea. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the policy of containment and weakening of Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and the sanctions dealt a serious blow to the entire world economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
