File photoMOSCOW, Jun 7The military in Mali has set a two-year transitional period before handing power over to civilians, according to a decree signed by Transitional President Colonel Assimi Goita.»Transitional period is set for 24 months, starting from March 26, 2022,» the decree reads, the text of which was read by the representative of the military authorities of Mali, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga on the air of the national television ORTM. On May 24, 2021, the military in Mali arrested interim President Ba Ndau and Prime Minister Moktar Uana and transported them to the Kati army base near the capital of Bamako. Vice President Assimi Goita then announced that he had dismissed the president and prime minister for violating the transitional charter. The military council headed by Goita took over the government and announced its intention to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2022, but then the authorities decided to postpone the elections to a later date for security reasons.
