File photoBRUSSELS, June 8 At the plenary session in Strasbourg, members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the EU countries to grant Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country. The decision was supported by 438 parliamentarians, 65 voted against.
"Members of the European Parliament expressed their desire to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate country as a clear political signal of solidarity with its people", the EP said in a statement.
The parliamentarians also supported the investigation of «all crimes committed in Ukraine» , and also called for the creation of a special UN tribunal. On February 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for the country's accession to the European Union. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during a visit to Kyiv in April, gave him a questionnaire to start negotiations on integration into the union.
