File photoATHENA, Jun 25 A forest is on fire on Mount Athos, more than a hundred firefighters, 35 ground vehicles and six aircraft are extinguishing the fire, the Greek fire department said. Arapis, in the northern part of the peninsula, began late Friday evening.

There were no reports of a threat to the monasteries. The causes of the fire are not yet known. An autonomous monastic republic is located on Mount Athos. There are 20 monasteries and dozens of hermitages here. Athos is considered the center of Orthodox monasticism. Holy Mount Athos is a special self-governing administrative unit within Greece.
