The prosecutor at a meeting of the Rostov Regional Court requested 11 years in prison for 40-year-old opera singer Vadim Cheldiev. Cheldiev, who lived in St. Petersburg in the spring of 2020, published in his Telegram channel announcements of the people's gathering on April 20 in Vladikavkaz against the «self-isolation regime». The rally, which was attended by about 1,500 people, ended in clashes between demonstrators and security forces and mass detentions.
Before the rally, Cheldiev was charged with “fake news” because of a post about the coronavirus (Article 207.1 of the Criminal Code), he was detained and escorted to Vladikavkaz. There, a new case was opened against him — about an attack on a policeman during the road from the Mineralnye Vody airport (Part 1 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code).
After the rally, Cheldiev was accused of organizing mass riots (Part 1 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code) and calling to extremism because of a video message in his telegram channel (Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code). After his arrest, he spent more than two years in a pre-trial detention center.
Other defendants in the case — 56-year-old «citizen of the USSR» Ramis Chirkinov and 31-year-old Post Bank employee Arsen Besolov, who are accused only of organizing riots (part 1 article 212 of the Criminal Code) — they were asked to appoint 9 years in prison.
The courts ordered administrative arrests for most of those detained at the protests. More than 20 rally participants received real terms on charges of participating in riots and attacking law enforcement officers (Part 2 of Article 212, Article 318 of the Criminal Code).
