MOSCOW, July 6, Oleg Bogatov. President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich said in an interview that the organization complied with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but the rights of the leading Russian chess players were respected. Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi became the winner of the Candidates Tournament held in Spain. The grandmaster will play a title match with world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen. Earlier, the IOC recommended to remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from international tournaments, this recommendation was followed by most international sports federations. «FIDE took a clear position and, in compliance with the requirements of the IOC, protected the rights of athletes,» said Dvorkovich. Russian women retain the right to take part in the women's matches scheduled for October. «Earlier, due to the situation in Ukraine, FIDE postponed the World Chess Olympiad — 2022 from Moscow and suspended the teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in tournaments under its auspices, Russian and Belarusian chess players can participate in FIDE competitions only in a neutral status.
