Georgy Yartsev was born on April 11, 1948 in the village of Nikolskoye, Kostroma Region. As a player, he played for Spartak, Lokomotiv, Kostroma Spartak, Smolensk Iskra, Belarusian Gomselmash and Moskvich. In 1979, as part of the «red-white» became the champion of the USSR. In 1980 he won the silver of the national championship. In total, Yartsev played 82 matches in the USSR championships and scored 38 goals. From 2003 to 2005, he served as head coach of the Russian national team. Under his leadership, the national team played in the finals of the 2004 European Championship.
